Fly Fishing Reels

Sage 1600 Series Fly Reels Two of the best selling fly reels we stock at Pro Tackle Outfitters are the Sage 1650 and the Sage 1680. Both are large arbor design, all aluminum construction with sealed graphite drag assemblies. The main reason for the popularity of the 1650, a reel designed for 4-6 line weights, is that the reel balances a 9’ fly rod so well. When I sell an outfit, I like a balance point where the index finger on the casting hand comes in contact with the rod handle. On most 9’ rods in the shop this will happen with the Sage 1650 reel. There is so much emphasis in the fly fishing industry about making reels as light as possible that manufacturers forget about balancing a long fly rod outfit. A 4-piece model which has a bit more weight due to two extra ferrules is especially difficult to balance. This reel has a smooth drag system that would come in handy for larger trout in fast current situations. I always try to put the fish “on the reel” because the drag is a lot smoother than the line going through my fingers. The 1680 Sage reel has been a “monster” on salmon and steelhead. I can’t tell you how many reels from our shop have been put to the test on Michigan Rivers in the last three years, especially during salmon season.
